Wii came so close this time

Shortly after 10 am, Akihabara. A small video game store is just cutting open the new shipment. They do not take credit cards, only cash. I have to walk (briskly) over to the ATM. Could not have taken more than five minutes. By the time I am back, there is a line of about ten people. Only the first five of us get the goods.

The Days are Numbered

... for my mobile phone. In October 2005, KDDI (who also operate au) acquired the Tu-Ka Group. In June 2006, Tu-Ka stopped accepting new subscriptions. On October, 24th, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was introduced in Japan, shortly after that I got an email from Tu-Ka offering me to switch to a new au phone while keeping my number (even on my prepaid service). This week, KDDI announced the cessation of all Tu-Ka services for March 2008.

Casino Royale

The new Bond, James Bond. Less suave, more brutal. Much less superhuman, and no gadgets (except for Sony product placements). No Q, but Krapp. No crazy super-villains, but arms dealers and their bankers. No plans to blow up the world, just a lot of money changing hands. All in all better than the both last Casino Royale and the last Brosnan.

Bluetooth Blues

When I bought my Mac Mini, I thought I do not need Bluetooth. My still orphaned Wiimote makes me regret that. [Link to something cool]

Skill is Stolen

I forgot my sports bag at home today, and so had to quickly buy a new (cheap) outfit for the running club, and Don Quixote is ideal for such an undertaking. So now I have a jogging jacket that says

SKILL IS STOLEN
across the back,
TO LEVERAGE!
It works, and a way is spread
on the front, and
Thought at that time is put
WRITE PHOTO
The result condition that really took picture entirely. $13.20
It tries this splandid technology
on the associated T-shirt. Splandid Technology.

Note One: I forgot to buy a towel. Convenience stores have those.

Note Two: The Friedberg Jacket has reappeared.

ORA-00600: internal error code

If Oracle made it easier to access their bug database, I would search for a solution, or post a nice report there, but as it is, I'll just post it here. Hopefully, this does not violate the code of conduct for Certified Professionals.

SQL> select * from dual where (dummy,dummy) in (((select dummy,dummy from dual)));

select * from dual where (dummy, dummy) in (((select dummy, dummy from dual)))
              *
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kkqtnlop2Cbk : 1], [], [], [], [],
[], [], []

Note that this actually crashes Oracle. Also note that it works as expected when there is only one column in the inline view, or if there is one pair less of superfluous brackets around it.

Update: While it crashes my 10g R2 XE (on Debian and on Windows), R1 seems safe...

Wii-Day Japan (Not Yet For Mii)

It was no big surprise that the late bird would not catch anything, but I tried anyway, and the morning of the first day of sales is not really all that late.

  • 10 am, the local electronics store, sold out.
  • 10:30 am, the two video game stores near the station, sold out.
  • 10:50 to 11:30, a pilgrimage through various stores in Mecca (Akihabara), all sold out, except for the shady individuals that resell at a hefty premium.
  • 11:50, the big Bic Camera in Yurakucho, sold out.
  • 12:20, Don Quixote in Kameido, sold out.
  • 12:45, the local Don Quixote, probably did not even have any in the first place.

In retrospect, it might have been a good idea to take a look at Akihabara yesterday night, especially since I was there at midnight anyway, changing trains coming back from work. On the other hand, that would have just meant camping out at the tail end of an already enormous queue. The clever solution would have been a pre-order, which is where the majority of the allotted units apparently went. Does not that defeat the purpose of a retail store? I would place an order on Amazon now, but they have stopped taking orders, as have most of the real shops, since they cannot guarantee when the next shipment arrives. I really hope Nintendo can pump out more units fast, so that this does not turn into a long-term shortage.

Nonetheless, I got myself the wiimote control, so that I can practice my serves and volleys in advance. I also wanted to carry it around as a talisman, but it is clunkier than I thought.
